Frequently Asked Questions
What do you struggle with the most?
As an author, the aspect I struggle with the most is never being able to read my own book. Yes, I write it, I have the first draft, and I edit it twenty-three times over, but I will never be able to sit down and read it for the first time, as it was meant to be.
What do you do when you’re not writing?
Drinking tea, attempting to grow my beard, and spending too much time looking at sweaters.
(Oh, and naps. Love me some good naps.)
What inspires your writing?
Much of my inspiration comes from emotional moments in my life. These moments could be from personal experiences, TV and Films, books, the back of a Honey Bunches of Oats box. Emotion and characters I feel are the two driving forces behind a good story, so if I can find ways of implementing them, I will. Sometimes it just reaches out and smacks you across the cheek.
Do you ever get writer’s block?
I do not! I had a horrible habit of writing my ideas on sticky notes until my room looked like a 1990s cubicle, think Office Space. I have since learned to organize my thoughts and use an app on my phones. That way it is down, and easy to access. I have yet to run out of ideas and when I’m tired and feel stuck somewhere, I work on a different section.
How do you finish a book?
A lot of people tell me they struggle with finishing the book, with starting the book. I think the reason for so many issues is people don’t break down the process. A book is not something that will happen overnight. At first, we all have some incredible inspiration that motivates us to write a story everyone will love, but inspiration and motivation are not always there. You must build the habit of writing every day and set goals that keep you moving forward.
Why do you write?
Like so many, it’s something I feel I need to do. Some have to paint, some have to work on cars, I have to write. The concept of making something from nothing and turning it into a story that others enjoy is a thrill I enjoy experiencing.
How often do you write?
On an average week, I try to write 20 to 25 hrs. I HATE waking up in the morning, but I pushed myself to get up earlier so I can write in the mornings. I also utilize any downtime to focus on my craft in the evenings.
